February Week 1

This week’s action saw last year’s runners up in Mixed League 1, Shaw, continue their fine form and their foothold on the top spot of the Division. This time the victims were hapless Kennet, who prop up the foot of the table. Rebecca Chivers and Andy Bodicus, swept through their matches in quick style and picked up their usual 3 points. They were ably assisted by Walker and Harrison, who put the finishing touches to a convincing 8-1 win. In the same Division St.Mary’s battered their opponents Newbury into a 9-0 whitewash with Jan Fisher and Pat Braithwaite surprising everyone by winning all of their matches. Newbury had a bad week it seems as they followed that loss up with a 7-2 loss at Aldermaston, which puts them in a perilous position in the drop zone.

In Mixed Division 2 Downlands dealt out the punishment to below par Shaw C. Last years runners up in the Division could not find an answer to the Downlands relentless attack, as they went down 8-1, with Keith Parson and Hannah Townley leading the way for the home side. In Mixed Division 3, Bucklebury swept aside Kennet C, and remained focussed despite the foul language being displayed by a team member of Aldermaston on the neighbouring courts.

The Ladies 4 Division 1 saw Shaw host the visit of Aldermaston and after a few close encounters came through the fixture boasting a 5-1 win, with Lucy Burton being the key to another Shaw victory. Despite this loss Aldermaston then took on Cannons days later and after a see-saw encounter managed a 3-3 draw. In the same competition St.Mary’s A suffered a surprise 5-1 loss to Newbury. The Newbury team led by Julia Eatwell showed great skill in seeing off their rivals.

In the Ladies 4, division 2 league, the welcome return of Mel Pennington from injury gave Kintbury the boost that they needed as they won through in a tight contest with Bucklebury. Despite being out for so long, Pennington showed her class as she won all three of her rubbers, and steered Kintbury to a 4-2 win. A great display by Linda Williams helped record a win for St.Mary’s B, as they looked to push on for promotion with a 6-0 win over Downlands.

In the Mens Division 1, the Saints won 9-0 at Downlands, but this was due to two factors. Firstly Downlands only had two pairs and secondly one of those pairs was filled by two juniors learning their way in the sport. Despite the inexperience of the Downlands second pair; Mark Ferguson and Tony Glinos thought that giving them a sound beating was the best way to encourage them into the sport…

Mens Division 2 showcased some tight matches this week. First off was the 5-4 thriller between Kennet B and Kintbury. With the tie finely balanced at 4-4, the ninthrubber was going to be the clincher for either side. Up stepped Dave Bilton and Malcolm Taylor to clinch the all-important points and the tie for Kennet B. Having suffered such a narrow defeat, Kintbury then had another close encounter, this time with Bucklebury, but yet again they managed to end up the losing side. The Bucks grinded out an impressive and hard-fought 6-3 win. This year surprise package Hurst kept up their promotion dreams with a stunning 6-3 win at Cannons that left them well placed in second.

February Week 4

After a rousing first game in which Jestadi and Leatham carved out a remarkable 28-26 victory against Pengold & Walker of Shaw 'A', Downlands threatened to turn the Men's Division 1 form book on its head.  Any chance of this was swiftly removed with a thorough Shaw comeback, winning the remaining 8 rubbers.

The Shaw 'B' team however were on the other end of similar punishment dealt out by a rejuvenated Cannons 'A' team. The relegation battle was a one-sided affair with Cannons using their home advantage to take the maximum points.

Kennet 'A' made the long trip to Wantage's Farringdon facilities and although Berkeley & Brown took all three of their rubbers, the other Wantage pairs could not add to the tally leaving Kennet 3 - 6 winners on the night.

Men's Division 2 produced a great battle between Cannon's 'B' and Firefly which went right to the wire. With both teams neck and neck at 4 rubbers each going into the final end, Steve Webb & Chris Nunne snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, taking the final end 21-19 for Firefly.

In Division 3, St Mary's 'B' visited Aldermaston and returned with a 3 - 6 win.  Shaw 'C' scraped through their encounter against Newbury 'B', winning 4 - 5 but the latter reversed this defeat when they played Greenacres a few days later with Haddon & Adams laying a sound base of 3 games for the other pairs to build on.

Shaw continued their gallop towards the Ladies 4 Division 1 title with a convincing 6 - 0 win over St Mary's who gradually rallied the troops to make each game progressively more difficult for the Shaw outfit. In Division 2 the scoreline was the same as Downland's young guns, including the ever improving Townley & Miller, romped home in fine fashion against Kennet.

In Mixed Division 1, St Mary's 'A' demolished a weakened Kennet 'A'.  Pennington & Meakin struggled to find form as the Saints cruised to a 8 - 1 victory with the help of Braithwaite & Fisher's best performance of the season.

The Division 2 side of Kintbury recorded two very good wins, 9 -0 and 7 -2 against St Mary's 'C' and Shaw 'C' respectively, the latter match marking the return to form of the recently missed Carl Wheatley.
